Outer Carton General Information

Suggested Carton Marking Guidelines For Shipments Inbound to the USA

  • There are no actual “importing” requirements on minimum carton markings for the USA

  • Country of Origin does not have to be on the cartons although it is encouraged

  • There may be “exporting” requirements on markings – this should be verified with our overseas Forwarding Partner.    For example – China export clearance regulations sometimes require proper country of origin markings on cartons.

  • We recommend neutral markings to avoid theft

  • Neutral markings such as:

    • No reference to your company name, division name, or supplier name.
    • You can create a coding system.  For example, Liberty International my only list LI instead of the whole name.

  • You should not list a commodity on the carton

  • There should be a point of reference on the  carton in order to identify the cartons

    • PO # / Style #    Total # Cartons in shipment (E.G. 1 OF 29)
      • This information should correspond to the packing list.  In the event of a customs exam this will assist USC to conduct the exam efficiently as they will be able to find the cargo they are targeting with ease.
    • Any numbers that you may need to have your own warehouse staff sort your goods

  • AWB / HAWB numbers are affixed by the forwarder and not the supplier

Miscellaneous

Customs will allow the use of shrink wrapping on the outer cartons.  Some importers have asked if this was possible for help in reducing pilferage.  Customs will cut through the plastic in order to examine and will reseal with the normal Customs tape.
